I Did It! I Ran My First RunDisney 5K!

22Feb_5K_9This past weekend I was able to mark one more item off of my Plunge List.  I’m excited to share that I completed my first RunDisney 5K, the Cinderella Royal Family 5K.  This 3.1 miles started in the Epcot parking long, meandered along a back street of Epcot before making entering into the park itself.  Once inside the park we ran through World Showcase, around Spaceship Earth and then exited the park to complete the Royal Family 5K back in the Epcot parking lot.  When I signed up for this 5K event, I honestly wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into, but I knew that this was something that I wanted to do.  Let me just say, the event was AMAZING!  It was one of those things that is hard to describe in words, but I can say that I honestly never knew that waking up at 3:30am and then walking and running with 10,000 other people could be this much fun!
22Feb_5K_5 22Feb_5K_422Feb_5K_10 22Feb_5K_1122Feb_5K_12I also took this opportunity to not only make a positive difference in myself and my own health, but I also wanted to use this event to help bring awareness and help make a difference for others.  Because of your support and generosity, I was able to raise $675 for Give Kids the World.  Thank you so much for believing in me, but more importantly thank you so much for believing in the work that Give Kids the World does.  If you wanted to donate and did not get a chance, there’s still time.  My GKTW Donation Page will be up until April 21, 2014.
22Feb_5K_622Feb_5K_13 22Feb_5K_1422Feb_5K_15I had such a great time participating in the Cinderella Royal Family 5K, that I have committed myself to the upcoming 2014 Everest Challenge (A 5K Obstacle Course with Scavenger Hunt), the Disney Happy Haunted Trail 5K and Mickey’s Jingle Jungle 5K.  Everest Challenge is currently filled to capacity, but I would love for you to join me in the Happy Haunted Trail 5K and Mickey’s Jingle Jungle 5K.  If you’d like to run/walk with me, you can register here.

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival – The Flower Power Concert Series

Can you believe it’s almost time for the 2014 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival?  Will you be attending?  I’m getting so excited as this is one of the items on my Plunge List.  I’ve never been to the Flower & Garden festival and I can’t wait to see all that it has to offer.

One thing I enjoy at Epcot is the various concert series that they put on at the American Gardens Theatre.  I love music from the 60s, 70s and 80s, so The Flower Power Concert Series sounds like it is going to be great fun.  Disney Parks Blog has reported that this year will be better than ever, with several acts returning from years past and a few new acts.  See below for the full entertainment schedule (subject to change) below.

  • March 14-16 – Gary Lewis and the Playboys (NEW)
  • March 21-23 – The Orchestra Starring Former Members of ELO

Not Your Typical Florida Tourist Attractions

Most of us have been to Walt Disney World, Universal and many of the other typical attractions locations in Florida.  This post about those Florida Tourist Attractions that are NOT TYPICAL, yet worth the stop.  Something tells me many of these will get added to my Plunge List.

Here are some of Florida’s NOT SO TYPICAL Attractions:

1.  Sugarloaf Key Bat Tower –  This historic site is located in Monroe County, FL just northeast of U.S. 1 at Mile Marker 17.  Built in 1926 to help decrease the mosquito population, it is now on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

2.  Whimzyland Bowling Ball House – With more than 500 bowling balls lining the flower beds and bordering the house, this odd house in Safety Harbour, FL is definitely a must see.

3.  The Bubble Room Restaurant and Emporium –  Located on Captiva Island in Southwest Florida, this one should be on everyone’s must do list!  The Bubble Room opened in 1979 and I’m happy to say that I’ve visited at least once every Summer since 1980.  You can read about our visit this past Summer here.

4.  Big Daddy Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing – Located in Ocala, FL, this museum is spread over several rooms and houses more than 200 quarter milers including, fuel dragsters, stock cars, funny cars and exhibitions cars like the Little Red Wagon.

5.  Johnny Donutseed – Located on Hwy 59 in Lloyd, FL, this reworked Johnny Appleseed now carries a donut and coffee mug.  This statue stands approx 10 1/2 feet tall and it’s definitely worth the detour to get a picture with this guy.

6.  Smallest Post Office In the U.S. – Ochopee, FL is hope to the smallest post office in the United States.  The small building, once a tool shed for a tomato farm, was converted into the post office after a fire in 1953 destroyed the original Ochopee Post Office located in the Gaunt Company Store.  This tiny building is located about 3 miles east of U.S. 41 and State Road 29.

7.  Wakulla Springs – Located in Wakulla Springs, FL, at this state park you can take a 40-60 minute glass bottom boat ride and if you are lucky, Henry-The-Pole-Vaulting-Fish might make an appearance!

8.  Spook Hill – Located in Lake Wales, FL, Spook Hill is known worldwide for an off phenomenon that many say is haunted. Visitors can park their cars at the bottom of the hill, place it in neutral and see as their car seems to defy gravity and be pushed up to the top of the hill.

9.  Monument of States – Located in Kissimmee, this 40 foot structure was built to show the unity of America after the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor.  A block of stone from each state was used to create this patriotic roadside attraction.
